Notes
The Buffalo Creek Rail-Trail is a rails-with-trails section of the Elk River Rail-Trail system. It runs 18 miles from Dundon to Widen in Clay County. It was originally owned by the Buffalo Creek & Gauley Railroad company and hauled coal from the mine at Widen and lumber from the sawmill at Swandale. Rail Explorers rides feature a 2 and 4-person electric-assisted rail-bikes that are easily pedaled. This rail-biking company offers a 12-mile round trip excursion that typically takes two hours. This business runs seasonally, is pet friendly, and reservations are recommended.
The 18-mile trail alongside and on the tracks is primarily suitable for hikers and is a popular destination for trout fishermen. It features the Devil’s Sawmill Waterfall.
